One Annoying Little thing about the Xerox Phaser 3635/X

Xerox Phaser 3635/X Missing Feature

If you are looking at purchasing the Xerox Phaser 3635/X copier, there is one thing that we find kind of annoying.  If you want to fax a document on your computer, you cannot use the printer driver to get this done.  On other copiers you can do this.  It seems that Xerox, being solid with laser printers and copiers would have that little feature worked into this product.  Even cheap HP MFP’s like the Laserjet 3390 do this.  Why would a copier that is close to $1,700 be missing it?

Maybe Xerox hopes that you will have to upgrade to the WorkCentre 4260 or some other copier that is more expensive.  Maybe they assume that it is not important.  Whatever their reason, it seems that Xerox missed the boat a bit on this one.

We believe the Xerox Phaser 3635/X should have this feature.  We were disappointed that it did not.

Xerox Phaser 8560MFP Set Up Issues

Xerox Phaser 8560MFP Issues

Xerox Phaser 8560MFP Issues

Some days you go out to a customer site and expect an easy install for a color laser printer or a color copier.  Generally, the Xerox Phaser 8560MFP is a super easy install… except… We hooked up the copier and when we tried to put in the IP Address, the Subnet Mask and the Gateway, the copier was having connectivity issues (as evidenced by the blinking yellow light rather than the green light…)  We hooked the network cables into a nearby Xerox WorkCentre 6505, and the 6505 worked perfectly with the same settings.  Annoying.

So, we called the 800-835-6100 number for technical support.

10 Minute hold time
Went through level 1.  Did you check the IP?  Yes.  Did you check the Gateway?  Yes, Did you check the Netmask?  Yes.  Let’s reset the NVRAM…  OK.  Is that better?  No.  Hmmm, we’ll let Level 2 deal with this. 10 minute conversation.

45 Minute hold time

Level 2 – Did you check the gateway?  Yes.  Let’s double check the settings.  Click start, type in cmd in the search.  Do you see a black pop up?  Yes.  OK type ipconfig…  what is the default gateway?  192.168.0.1 — Just like it is on the copier.  That’s weird.  Is the yellow light or the green light blinking on the copier.  Yellow.  OK, that sounds like a hardware issue…  Can you ping the ip of the device by typing in the ip address into the Windows browser?  Yes, did that, nothing…  We’ll dispatch a tech. 15 Minute conversation.

10 minute hold.

TOTAL TIME: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes!

Gathered info.  Service call placed.
Service tech calls back about an hour later and tells us to do the following.

Under Connection Setup, Network Setup, Eternet Speed, change the value from Auto to 10 mb/ Full Duplex.

Now, we are getting ready to install the scan and print drivers.  I know these have to be installed a certain way to make them work in Windows 7.  I am calling a tech back on this as I know the standard driver download does not work.  If I remember correctly, it is important to download and install the scan driver first and then the printer driver, not the combo driver because if you do that, it’s basically impossible to get scanning to work correctly. So, the Xerox Phaser 8560MFP works fine, but set-up is a major pain!

HP Color Laser Printer

HP Color Laser Printer Sales

Many people call us looking to purchase a HP Color Laser Printer and we are always happy to help!  HP is certainly one of the most popular color laser printer brands for a reason.  We find that a lot of HP buyers are loyal for some of the following reasons:

  • HP Color Laser Printers are reliable
  • HP Color Laser Printers are not going to get anyone fired or in trouble.  Why did you buy that color laser printer can always be answered, “I’d assume it’d work great, it is an HP…”
  • HP color laserjets are easy to get service on.  If you purchase a more “off brand” laser printer, you may be married to the one company that can service it.  Everyone can get an HP serviced.

We do like HP overall as a brand, though there are a lot of times where comparing laser printers makes the most sense.  Our database includes 20 different brands, and HP is one of the color laser printer brands we make sure is in the conversation.  We believe HP, Xerox, and Kyocera tend to build the most competitive color laser printers, possibly also Ricoh…  Our goal is to help ensure you are purchasing the correct laser printer for your company!

Setting a Static IP when Connecting Locally or Wireless in Windows XP & Windows 7

Tags: , , ,

Date: 2011-11-07

Please read first before jumping ahead!

These instructions are for users that have a computer on a wireless network, but also need to attach their PC to a multi-function printer using a network cable.

If you do not have a network switch that you can connect your computer and multi-function printer into, you will need a CROSS-OVER NETWORK CABLE.

Once your multi-function printer & computer are connected to each other with a cross-over cable (or network switch) you can begin setting up your computer with a static IP.

Setting up a static IP in Windows XP

  1.  Click on the ‘START’ button, click ‘RUN’ then type in the word: command
Command

       2.   Click ‘OK’, the command prompt window will appear. Type in: ipconfig /all

Information similar to the example below will appear for your wireless network card/adapter.

Write down the IP Address, you will need to know this to avoid setup up conflicting network addresses in your computer and in your multi-function printer.

Command Prompt

Type ‘exit’ to close the command prompt window.

  1. Click on the ‘START’ button, go to ‘SETTINGS’ then ‘CONTROL PANEL’

*Click the ‘Switch to Classic View’ option on the left hand side of the Control Panel window – if you see the ‘Switch to Category View’ option then your are already in Classic View.

  1. Double click ‘NETWORK CONNECTIONS’

You should see at least two network connection, one for your wireless network and one for your local network (aka your network card that you are using to link to your multi-function printer).  Double click ‘Local Area Connection’

Connection Status

Now click on ‘Properties’

Scroll down until you see ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ then click on it to highlight it (do not remove the check mark!)

Connection Properties

Now click the ‘Properties’ button just below it and to the right.

Internet Protocal

Click the radio button to select ‘USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS’

We now need to choose an IP Address for you computer. This address should not be the same as the one you saw assigned to your wireless card/adapter in the command prompt window.

Example:

Your Wireless Card/Adapter has the IP Address:            192.168.240.77

Assign your Local Network Card the IP Address:             10.10.10.77

And set the Subnet Mask to:                                                 255.255.255.0

Internet Protocal

*Because your computer is already on a wireless network we do not want or need to enter a default gateway or any DNS server address information for your Local Network Card’s Connection.

Click ‘OK’ to set the IP and return to the ‘Local Area Connection Properties’ window, then click ‘OK’ to get back to the ‘Local Area Connection Status’ window and ‘Close’ to exit.

You can now close the ‘Control Panel’ window.

  1. Obtain your multi-function printer’s manual and follow the instructions to set it up with a static IP. The IP will need to be in the same range as the one you just assigned to your computer’s network card.

Example:

You assigned your computer the IP Address:                        10.10.10.77

You should then assign your printer an IP like:            10.10.10.80 or 10.10.10.101

And set the printer’s subnet mask to:                                    255.255.255.0

*You will not need to enter a gateway or any DNS address information into your printer because it is only attached to your computer.
