Setting a Static IP when Connecting Locally or Wireless in Windows XP & Windows 7

Tags: , , ,

Date: 2011-11-07

Please read first before jumping ahead!

These instructions are for users that have a computer on a wireless network, but also need to attach their PC to a multi-function printer using a network cable.

If you do not have a network switch that you can connect your computer and multi-function printer into, you will need a CROSS-OVER NETWORK CABLE.

Once your multi-function printer & computer are connected to each other with a cross-over cable (or network switch) you can begin setting up your computer with a static IP.

Setting up a static IP in Windows XP

  1.  Click on the ‘START’ button, click ‘RUN’ then type in the word: command
Command

       2.   Click ‘OK’, the command prompt window will appear. Type in: ipconfig /all

Information similar to the example below will appear for your wireless network card/adapter.

Write down the IP Address, you will need to know this to avoid setup up conflicting network addresses in your computer and in your multi-function printer.

Command Prompt

Type ‘exit’ to close the command prompt window.

  1. Click on the ‘START’ button, go to ‘SETTINGS’ then ‘CONTROL PANEL’

*Click the ‘Switch to Classic View’ option on the left hand side of the Control Panel window – if you see the ‘Switch to Category View’ option then your are already in Classic View.

  1. Double click ‘NETWORK CONNECTIONS’

You should see at least two network connection, one for your wireless network and one for your local network (aka your network card that you are using to link to your multi-function printer).  Double click ‘Local Area Connection’

Connection Status

Now click on ‘Properties’

Scroll down until you see ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ then click on it to highlight it (do not remove the check mark!)

Connection Properties

Now click the ‘Properties’ button just below it and to the right.

Internet Protocal

Click the radio button to select ‘USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS’

We now need to choose an IP Address for you computer. This address should not be the same as the one you saw assigned to your wireless card/adapter in the command prompt window.

Example:

Your Wireless Card/Adapter has the IP Address:            192.168.240.77

Assign your Local Network Card the IP Address:             10.10.10.77

And set the Subnet Mask to:                                                 255.255.255.0

Internet Protocal

*Because your computer is already on a wireless network we do not want or need to enter a default gateway or any DNS server address information for your Local Network Card’s Connection.

Click ‘OK’ to set the IP and return to the ‘Local Area Connection Properties’ window, then click ‘OK’ to get back to the ‘Local Area Connection Status’ window and ‘Close’ to exit.

You can now close the ‘Control Panel’ window.

  1. Obtain your multi-function printer’s manual and follow the instructions to set it up with a static IP. The IP will need to be in the same range as the one you just assigned to your computer’s network card.

Example:

You assigned your computer the IP Address:                        10.10.10.77

You should then assign your printer an IP like:            10.10.10.80 or 10.10.10.101

And set the printer’s subnet mask to:                                    255.255.255.0

*You will not need to enter a gateway or any DNS address information into your printer because it is only attached to your computer.

Xerox Phaser 7800 Released Today!

Xerox Releases Phaser 7800 Today!

If you are used to using the Xerox Phaser 7760 due to the color calibration and the excellent graphic design capacity, then you are in for a treat with the Xerox Phaser 7800!  Xerox build the Phaser 7800 off of the same platform and then added some of the features graphic designers have been asking for.

One of the main features graphic designers have wanted is the ability to do full bleed 11 X 17.  Since the Phaser 7800 can do up to 13X18, a graphic designer can now do a full bleed 11X17.  Of course, the trimmer will have to come out to accomplish this goal.

On top the increased size capacity, the speed has gone up a little to 45 pages a minute and there is a color touchscreen where you can view jobs, and have more control over the laser printer.

The color quality is stunning as Xerox continues to use their emulsion aggregate toner formulation on this laser printer.  Essentially, this means all the toner particles are the same size which is part of the reason the color is so consistent.

If you would like more information on this laser printer, please give us a call!

How to Print Faster with Your Laser Printer

Various Tips to Print Faster with Your Laser Printer
6 Tips on How to Print Faster
Printers have come a long way, especially in speed. Even inexpensive laser printers these days can print an average of 25 to 30 pages per minute, whereas a few years ago, the number was about 4 to 5 pages. If you find your laser printer is not printing near its stated capacity, there is likely a bottleneck in the process worth investigating.
Six common types are:
1. Reduce Your Quality Setting Print at the quality setting appropriate for your needs. If you’re printing a 100 page rough draft that you’re gonna toss out anyway, then go for the lowest setting. Not only will you save time, but money and less wear and tear. 2. Split Up Your Larger Documents Printing large batches with your laser printer at one time can overload the buffer or memory on your printer or computer. Try splitting up larger batches, especially those involving high DPI color pictures. 3. Increase Your RAM Many printers have expansion slots where you can insert additional memory. Find out if your printer does, and if so, invest the small amount necessary to increase the RAM available. 4. Ensure Your Computers Cache is used Right click the Print Under Printer->Properties->Advanced. There should be a checkbox next to ‘keep printed documents’. This will keep printed documents available for follow up printing, saving time for your print jobs. 5. Use the Fastest Connection Possible Monitor the difference in printing speed between your computer and laser printer. If you notice a faster printing with a direct USB cable, then by all means go with it. 6. Make Sure Your Computer is Not Slowing the Printer In addition to your printer, ensure your computer is optimized. Ensure open applications are closed, unused programs are uninstalled, your drive is defragmented, and most importantly, you have sufficient RAM on your computer.

Xerox Phaser 8560MFP Q&A

Tags: , , , ,

I  recently had a customer with two separate issues concerning the Xerox Phaser 8560MFP (Color Multifunction Printer)- Wireless scanning and default black and white printing from a Mac. We tried about everything we knew to resolve these issues.  It seems the B&W can be addressed by making a new profile. If you are well versed on Mac’s, you may not have too much trouble there.  I found a document that helped explain the process some if you are not listed here. Scanning has been a more troublesome question.  Here is the reply I got from my Xerox engineer on the two questions – The ppds are set up with the defaults you see, ppd files can be edited and changed they are in readable PS language.  Xerox does not publish any ppds that are defaulted to b&w. I have seen the 8560mfp scanning work for customers over wireless connections, generally Xerox support will not support scanning issues if there is a wireless connection, meaning the first step for them would be to remove wireless and connect hard wired. The customer I worked with used a Linksys wireless bridge and had no issues. Knowing these issues may exist for other customers, I thought it would be good to list this here for you.

Welcome!
