The Xerox Phaser 8560 and Xerox Phaser 8860 is a Fragile Mailing Experience!

If you speak to a sales rep who sells the Xerox Phaser 8560 or the Xerox Phaser 8860 it will seem like this is the best printer in the history of mankind… if you are speaking to someone who sells another brand of color printer in Denver, it will be the worst printer in mankind! I guess this is how perspective works. We focus on what works for us. I suppose this is the benefit of being a multi-vendor company. We can see strengths and weaknesses and not freak out one way or the other. FYI — The Phaser 8560 and the Phaser 8860 are basically the same printer – just different supplies (bigger wax blocks in the Phaser 8860 and lower costs for the wax making it have a much lower cost per print) The Xerox Phaser 8560 is a wax technology. Think of it this way… 4 different colors of crayons are melted, shot through a printhead and pushed into the paper through some pressure. Now, the nice part is that even cheap paper looks like glossy paper since it is wax and not a traditional color laser printer. The disadvantage is this… Mail sorters. How does a mail sorter work? Basically seperation and then it goes through a reader. In order to read correctly it must go through individually. This requires pressure. The volume of mail requires speed. Speed and pressure basically equals heat. Heat melts wax… are you starting to see the issue? Now, other manufacturers will act as if you will have a clean piece of paper and candle wax in an envelope. It’s not that bad. There is simply some streaking that can occur. Before you decide to buy the Xerox Phaser 8560 or the Xerox Phaser 8860 color printer, just have some print samples run. If you never do mailers, don’t worry. If you do, it may still be OK, but you will want to test the runs so that you do not purchase a color printer that you’ll want to return. If you send us files, we’d be happy to print and mail you some samples. If you hear that the Xerox Phaser 8560 or the Xerox Phaser 8860 is awful, don’t worry, you are probably talking to someone who sells a competitor’s color box. If you hear no one ever had this problem, you are probably talking to a Xerox employee.

Xerox Phaser 6360 — Unusual Problem Encountered

We recently sold a Xerox Phaser 6360DN to a customer here in Denver and they had some issues we are not used to experiencing. Basically, the print kept “banding” … meaning it looked like there was very thin horizontal stripes printing on the pages and it made the print quality seem less than desireable. Customers freak out when things don’t look perfect, the point of this post is to make sure you know every printer can have issues coming out of the box. What you have to decide is if you want a technician to come fix the issues or if you want to just send back the laser printer. Generally, either are valid options, but the sooner you decide, the better it is for us all! If you had bought the Xerox Phaser 8560, you may have had a single stripe going across the whole page… Every printer has the propensity to have a certain kind of error. The Lexmark X654de can slightly skew scans so copiers are crooked. The Ricoh C420DN’s seem to get messed up in shipping. What’s the point? Basically, it is if you get a printer with an issue out of the box, it is not the end of the world, you just have to decide what you want to do.

I wanted to take a moment and help clarify some interesting facts and myths about the solid ink series of Xerox. Just to have full disclosure here, we do sell quite a few of these, but we also sell Ricoh, Lexmark, Okidata, Kyocera and HP color. Manufacturer’s love to sell fear. What they like to do is to make sure they make you afraid of what the other manufacturers are doing or maximize their competitor’s weaknesses while minimizing their own. This is prevalent when coming to the Phaser series of solid ink printers. What are some Myths and truths? If you leave prints made from a solid ink machine in your car, they will melt. — Little bit of both actually. We have left prints made from a Xerox 8560 in our car here in the middle of summer on 90 degree days and the prints did not melt. They did change color in the pictures and the ink obviously made its way deeper into the paper as you could see a reverse image easily on the back which normally you could not. It was not, however, like someone was melting a candle on the dashboard. We have also had a customer who makes books with the solid ink machine deal with some sticking together in the same test when it was in a book format. Bottom line — If your prints are going to have a ton of intensly heated, direct sun exposure… maybe a traditional laser would be a better fit for you. Solid ink is “better/worse” than laser printers — Myth I would call this a myth because color quality is subjective. We have lots of customers who think the Phaser 8560 or the Phaser 8860 are the best printers on the market and others who will not touch them. Really, if you are not sure of what sort of print quality these machines have, you really need to test them with your own file so you can compare. It is a very subjective thing. Similar to whether you like blondes or brunettes… there isn’t technically a correct answer, but people tend to have preferences. The Phaser 8560 / Phaser 8860 goes 30 pages per minute — BOTH Techically, the printer CAN go 30 pages a minute, in fast draft mode. The thing that generally happens is people print using pactorty defaults of “enhanced” and print at 20 pages per minute rather than 30 pages per minute. The Photo mode is only 10 pages per minute. The Phaser 8560 / Phaser 8860 should be shut off at night to conserve power — Myth Although you would technically save some power if you turned the machine off and on everyday, you would waste so much ink and money this would be a horrible decision. From a financial and green standpoint, you would be far better off leaving it on and then putting the printer into sleep mode. This is the way it was desigend. You would probably triple to quadrouple the cost of ownership if you turned it off and on every night. Xerox Phaser 8560

The Xerox Phaser 8560 is the replacement for Xerox printer models such as the Xerox Phaser 860, Xerox Phaser 8200, Xerox Phaser 8400, Xerox Phaser 8500 or the Xerox Phaser 8550. The only real noticeable difference between the Xerox Phaser 8550 and the Phaser 8560 is the shape of the wax blocks. I know, pretty necessary to make a new model so they could change the shape of the wax blocks (so remanufacturers can’t sell compatibles.) PROS – The wax based engine gives print a shine which makes prints look like they were printed on more expensive paper. The printer is small and super easy to load supplies in compared to it’s competitors. Has very good fill and saturation in its color prints. Reasonable cost per print for low per month volumes CONS Ink will actually change colors if left in the dashboard of a car in the hot summer for a few days Ink can be prone to flaking off when going through the mail on cardstock Is not cost effective in higher volume per month applications (over 750 sheets per month in color.) If you are going to print more than this, you should be looking at the Xerox Phaser 8860 instead.

Why Fixing a Xerox Phaser 8400 is a Bad Idea

You have a Xerox Phaser 8400 and you have been having some print quality issues so you figure it is time to get the device looked at. That might be the worst idea you could have right now. Why? Basically, with the new cost per print plans, it is more cost effective for most customers to have a new Xerox Phaser 8560 or Xerox Phaser 8860 than it is to have an old printer you have to purchase supplies and maintenance for. Xerox has some AWESOME cost per print plans which can cost as low as $.05 per color print (if you do heavy volume) or $.12 if your volume is lighter. You can learn the advantages of being on a cost per print contract by taking a look at this cost per print presentation. Let’s say you print 2,500 color prints a month on the Phaser 8860 and you want to see how this compares to the Xerox Phaser 8560 or the Xerox Phaser 8860. Here are what the numbers would look like side by side. Once you see the supplies prices, you’ll see why I am saying it doesn’t make sense to repair the Xerox Phaser 8400.
